Food bank partnership cuts our store’s food waste by 62 per cent
Every day we share food that can no longer be sold but is still safe to eat with the local food bank. In three years our waste fell by 62 per cent and 410 tonnes of food reached people in need.

Istanbul, press release — GÜL GROSS MARKET has announced the three-year results of the Zero Waste Programme it launched in 2022. Food waste in our store has fallen by 62 per cent compared with the programme’s first year.
How it works
Products that are close to their use-by date, have damaged packaging or cannot be sold because of their appearance, but are still safe to eat, are sorted every evening. The next morning, the Ataşehir food bank’s van collects them from our store and delivers them to families in need the same day.
Three years of results
- 410 tonnes of food shared instead of wasted.
- Regular support for around 2,300 families.
- Organic waste that cannot be shared goes to a composting plant; food sent to landfill has fallen by more than 80 per cent.
Preventing waste in the first place
Preventing waste matters as much as sharing. Our bakery bakes in small batches according to demand, and in the produce section our “A bit wonky, same taste” shelf sells imperfect-looking produce at a discount. Our new cold store has also reduced waste.
