Twelve self-checkout tills have been added to our store’s retail checkout line. During a three-month trial, average queuing time fell by 38 per cent between 17:00 and 20:00 and at weekend lunchtimes.
How does it work?
You scan your items yourself and pay by contactless card, phone or GÜL Card. Each till has scales for loose produce; simply choose the item from the picture on screen. A team member is on hand to help for every four tills.
Who is it for?
- Small baskets: ideal for up to 15 items.
- Evening shoppers: pick up a few things on the way home without queuing.
- GÜL Card holders: campaign discounts are applied automatically when you scan your card.
The number of staffed tills has not changed; our 28 retail and 6 wholesale tills remain open. Some of our cashiers have moved into customer support at the self-checkout area and onto the shop floor.
For age-restricted products such as alcohol and tobacco, approval is given by a team member. Case and wholesale purchases can only be made at the wholesale tills.
